The Island’s own adult learning group, otherwise known as the University of the Third Age, aka; U3A launches its autumn programme in September with 43 study groups ranging from Art to Mah-Jong, from quilting to Plant-swopping.
Its all there for mature students at bargain price of £10 p.a, or £5 from now till Christmas. Some groups meet in the South Wight Area.
Among the new groups will be ‘Political Studies’ which will progress from the history of the Vote and then follow the processes that result in a person being elected. This could be of particular value to anyone thinking of putting themselves up for a local election to Town, Parish or County councils.
The tutor is Louis Lawrence BA, an experienced election agent who explains;
“The next local elections for Town and County are in May 2013 . Anyone can put themselves forward. Local elections cost nothing to enter. Getting yourself on to a ballot paper is not only for some elite group and if you want a real say in how your council is run you should put yourself forward. There are many who write to the media about local issues , but to be really effective you must stand for election. Even if you do not get through, it jolts the others to take notice ! The process is not complicated and you will be guided through it. To stand for election you do not have to be a member of a political party. You will need to find some money for the cost of circular letters and posters but that cost can be shared by friends and you must keep a careful note of all your election expenses. The Election officials at County Hall are also very helpful”
