Ventnor Esplanade Works Unveiled
Jun 15th, 2009 | By Simon Butler | Isle of Wight News From The Island PulseEco-friendly toilets powered by a water turbine, a restored play area, public showers – these are just some of the features that will be officially unveiled by Isle of Wight Council following months of refurbishment work on Ventnor Esplanade.
A ceremony to mark the completion of the project will take place at 11.30am on Tuesday 23rd June.
As part of the council’s commitment to improve the environment in major towns across the Island, many parts of Ventnor Esplanade have been given an upgrade during the works.
This includes new state of the art public toilets that utilises a water-turbine to source its power. New showers have been installed for beach users while the well-known paddling pool, including the Isle of Wight ‘Island’ in the middle, has been given a make-over.
The historic drinking fountain has been repaired; a new pool installed at the foot of the Cascade waterfall and the road layout has been improved to allow safer access to the car park on the Esplanade.
Isle of Wight Council Director of Environment and Neighbourhoods Stuart Love said
“The council is committed to improving the public realm in our towns and the Ventnor Esplanade works are a superb example of this.
“The project is also very eco-friendly with the new public conveniences using clean energy and new plants put in that require very low maintenance.
“All this has been achieved through the dedication of a number of council staff who have worked hard to complete the project in time for what is expected to be a very busy summer tourism season.
“We’ve already been receiving excellent feedback from residents and tourists and we look forward to officially cutting the ribbon”
