An area of Ventnor Esplanade is set to be transformed after plans by a local business were approved by the Isle of Wight Council’s development control sub-committee.
Councillors at their meeting last night approved plans by Cheetah Marine for a boat-fitting facility, café, boat storage area, and harbour master’s office to the east of the pumping station on Eastern Esplanade, it will also include the provision of a small chandlery.
The scheme had been modified to try and address concerns over initial proposals. Ventnor Town Council was one body to withdraw its opposition after the scheme was redrawn to address points raised in opposition.
In total there were 81 representations made about the revised scheme and 47 objections.
Recommending that the scheme be approved, planning officers said they felt the proposed buildings were of satisfactory design and that the mixed use of the site met the aims of the Ventnor Eastern Esplanade Development brief.Â
Members supporting the application also drew attention to the fact that the proposals helped sustain the future of a highly skilled, local workforce as well as enhancing the local environment.
Plans were approved with an additional condition requiring the continued use of the site for the marine industry in perpetuity.
