Tighten the Reins on Equine Theft.
Oct 25th, 2006 | By Amanda Johnson | Isle of Wight News From The Island PulseIf horse owners are planning to buy a new trailer, they should check if it is stolen before they purchase it by accessing the website www.nfed.co.uk or contacting your local Equine Liaison Officer. If there is any suspicion that it is stolen, they are advised to walk away.Â
It is also possible to mark tack using a kit supplied by Hampshire Constabulary, free of charge to members of the Horsewatch scheme.
Rugs used to keep horses warm as the weather gets colder should also be clearly marked with bold lettering to deter thieves.
Equine Liaison Officers also advise that horses are micro chipped, local vets can supply more information about this.
Taking these measures would enable stolen property to be returned promptly, should it be recovered.
Equine Liaison Officer, PC Alison Tilbury, said: “Taking these simple steps could really assist us in reuniting any stolen property we recover to the rightful owner.
“We would ask all horse owners to get in touch with us if they do not have their tack or trailers marked and ensure they lock away all of their property securely when it is not in use.â€
Anyone requiring more information about tack marking and other security measures, or Horsewatch, should contact their local Equine Liaison Officer on 0845 045 45 45.
