The West Wight: Past and Present at Dimbola

Part II of a Local Heritage Special takes place on the Isle of Wight until 1st April (free entry during February) 2012 at Dimbola Museum and Galleries in Freshwater.

First commissioned  at the beginning of the 21st century, this fascinating West Wight: Past and Present project features images from C19th and early C20th postcards of West Wight landmarks, and alongside them photographs of the same place taken in 2000.

Visitor responses at the time were highly complementary, such as “brilliant idea, excellent execution” and “brings back to life all those wonderful memories”. The idea was part of the JMC Trust’s own stated aim of celebrating the ‘Tennyson Mile’.

The project was supported by a grant from the ‘Millennium Festival Awards For All’ scheme and now is itself a part of local history, as some of these street scenes are themselves now considerably changed. There have been many requests over the last decade to re-show the best of these images.

The exhibition can be viewed between until 1st April (free entry during February) 2012 at Dimbola Museum and Galleries in Freshwater.
