Three members of staff at The Heights Leisure Centre in Sandown have been given prestigious roles at the London 2012 Olympics.
Martin Lovett and Liz Eggleton, who are both involved with swimming activities at the centre, have been chosen as volunteers – known as ‘Games Makers’ – at the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park.
Meanwhile, swimming instructor and leisure attendant Mark Alchin has been chosen to present medals to competitors at an equestrian event.
Helping at the Games
Martin has been allocated to the transport team at the Aquatics Centre, which means he will welcome competitors to the centre and provide assistance. Liz is part of the events team also based at the Aquatics Centre, and her job will be to scan spectator tickets, show them to their seats and carry out general reception duties.
Both Martin and Liz have attended training sessions and will begin work when the Games get underway.
Medals
Mark, who was part of Team Isle of Wight in last year’s NatWest Island games held on the Isle of Wight, has been recognised as a ‘young achiever’ by the Olympics. As part of this scheme, he will be given the prestigious honour of presenting successful competitors their medals at selected equestrian events.
David Pugh, Isle of Wight Council Leader said “I send my congratulations to Mark, Liz and Martin on their prestigious roles at the London Olympics. It will be a fantastic experience for them and no doubt they’ll be the envy of many of their colleagues.”
