Secure Your Island Home During Fireworks Celebrations.
Oct 29th, 2007 | By Citizen Media | In: Community, Events, Islandwide, Isle of WightHampshire and Isle of Wight police are urging residents not to give burglars an open invitation to their home while they celebrate with traditional fireworks and bonfire parties. The increasing hours of darkness and the noise of fireworks create enough distraction for burglars to take advantage of insecure homes.Â
Many people are out at fireworks displays for the evening or in their back gardens and fail to take basic precautionary measures to protect their property.Â
Hampshire Constabulary’s Crime Prevention Manager, Malcolm Wilton said:Â
“Bonfire night can be a wonderful time for families and young people. However, in the excitement of house parties, front doors are left open as well as garage doors, garden gates and side passageways. This makes it easy for burglars to slip in and help themselves without anyone noticing, as well as giving them a choice of escape routes.
“If you are going somewhere else, lock up carefully and don’t leave your house in darkness. Clear signs of an empty house could attract burglars.â€
Burglary is an opportunistic crime. Burglars take advantage of an open window or unlocked door and they carry out the crime very quickly. Make sure you’re not a victim by following this advice:
Remember remember…
Lock and close all doors and windows when watching a firework display in your back garden or going out for the evening.
Make your home look occupied even if you are away from it. Leave lights on in the rooms normally occupied.
Draw the curtains and leave the radio on. If your neighbours are away, keep an eye on their property.
