Warm autumn days have given visitors to Ventnor Botanic Garden an unusual opportunity in October to see its brightly-coloured colony of rare wall lizards.

Island Pulse Intro: Isle of Wight Council parks and countryside manager Matthew Chatfield said: An interesting debate has quietly gone back and forth over the status of this particular colony of lizards. Wall lizards are not recognised as a native British species. As non-natives, they are not protected by law and, indeed, it would be illegal to release a wall lizard into the wild. Mr Chatfield also said there was anecdotal evidence that the colony had been introduced to Ventnor, possibly in Victorian times. Image Copyright Lucy Johnson.
