The New Year Honours List for 2010 has been published. The vast majority of the awards go not to stars of sport, stage and screen but to ordinary people who have gone the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of people around them.
Across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire we note New Years Honours of OBE and MBE are bestowed on:
OBE: Richard Edward Priest Chief Executive, Riverside Centre. For services to the community in the Isle of Wight.
MBE: Ian DAVIS For services to the House of Commons. (Bembridge, Isle of Wight)

This year a total 979 people were honoured by the Queen of whose work in a wide range of fields, include; animal welfare, arts and sports, cancer research, human rights, heritage projects, benefits offices and watchmaking.
More than half of the people receiving MBEs were put forward by members of the public. And more women have been honoured than ever before, making up 45 per cent of the list.
A number of well-known people have received awards. Among the big names being honoured, there are knighthoods for Star Trek and X-Men star Patrick Stewart, National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner, and rugby legend Ian McGeechan. There are also MBEs for Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button and Britain’s most successful gymnast, Beth Tweddle.
Honours lists are published twice a year at New Year and in mid-June on the date of The Queen’s official birthday. Anyone can receive an award if they reach the required standard of merit or service, and honours lists contain a wide variety of people from different backgrounds. Anyone can nominate someone for an award.
