Police To Fly High With Air Support Unit

Hampshire Constabulary has been working with Surrey and Sussex Police for the past two years to scope potential for a collaborative initiative in relation to police air support .

Work to develop a shared, cost effective police air support service for the three counties has resulted in a proposal to create a consortium operating two aircraft across the three police force areas, one of these aircraft is to be based in Hampshire.

This proposal will be discussed at a Hampshire Police Authority meeting on July 20, 2010, when a decision will be made.

Adrian Collett, Vice Chair to the Hampshire Police Authority, said:

“After two years of discussions we believe we have reached agreement to deliver the future air support to policing across Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex.

“If agreed by our respective police authorities, this will deliver improved services in addition to considerable savings.

“Given that we are entering a period of austerity, we believe this is a significant achievement for the communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”
