Transport Police are appealing to members of the public for information after a foreign exchange student was seriously assaulted by a group of males at Ryde station on the Isle of Wight.
BTP Sergeant Derek Bish said the incident happened at Ryde Esplanade station in the early hours of Saturday morning (March 31st).

“A foreign exchange student was sitting on a bench on platform one at Ryde Esplanade station at about 12.30am when he was approached and subsequently assaulted by three males.

“It would appear the 18-year-old victim managed to escape his attackers and hid behind a power cabinet.

“He emerged several hours later and was found sitting in a nearby bus shelter at about 4am. A local bus driver raised the alarm and he was taken to St Marys Hospital, Newport for treatment.”

Sergeant Bish said police were eager to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have been around the station or bus stop area late on Friday night or early on Saturday morning.

“The victim has swelling to his eye and has sustained a possible fractured cheek bone in this attack. We’re investigating a number of leads, but would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or the Witness Appeal Line on 0207 391 5275 quoting incident number 171 of 31/5.
