Photography Competition Challenges the Senses.
Jun 13th, 2008 | By Carolyn Keene | In: Arts, Community, Competition, Interactive, Isle of Wight, Online, PhotographyFamous footballer Graeme Le Saux is inviting 11 to 18 year olds to enter their photos into a national competition. Le Saux a keen photographer himself, heads up the judging panel of the competition organised by Sightsavers International.
Sightsavers International works in developing countries to prevent blindness, restore sight and advocate equal rights for people who are blind and visually impaired.
The photography competition challenges 11 to 18 year olds to take a picture of something that “stirs the senses” such as waves crashing on a beach or someone dancing to a tune on their ipod to enter into the i:click awards.
The charity hopes the competition will help students think about what it would be like to live without sight.
Le Saux said:
“I wouldn’t say I’m any good at photography, but I’ve always been interested in the story a picture can tell. I love the fact that you can be creative when taking pictures. From my point of view it’s the composition that’s important as well as the subject - it’s all about balance.”
Photographer Mary McCartney, daughter of Sir Paul, is also supporting the competition.
She said:
“It’s a way of communicating ideas with other people. We all see things from different perspectives.
“If ten people took photos of the same vase of flowers, the chances are that the resulting images wouldn’t look anything like each other.”
Winners will attend an awards ceremony in London in the autumn to claim prizes that include a camera and a school visit from a professional photographer.
