News Update 10th August: Silver Medal, fantastic result for the 470 girls – congratulations Saskia and Hannah. This time next week they’ll be on the Isle of Wight at Cowes Week.
Sailors Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark are on an emotional journey and are well underway in their London 2012 medal quest.
Watch video report below.
Having met with Hannah and Saskia earlier this year on the Isle of Wight, we wish Team GB Sailing good luck.
After competing for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the pair (pictured) intend to make a guest appearance at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.
Rapidly establishing themselves amongst the world’s women’s 470 elite, since arriving at the Olympic Sailing venue in Weymouth and Portland, the pair have been wholly focussed on finishing what they started in February 2011.
The sailing duo, competing in the 470 Women’s two-person dinghy class, only paired up 18 months ago, to campaign for London 2012 and are in a strong position on the leaderboard.
Silver medals at the 2011 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta and Olympic Test Event, both at the Olympic venue, earned them selection for London 2012, which they marked with another silver medal at the 2011 Worlds in Perth. But it was their performance in Barcelona in May that really gave the girls heart before the Games.
Saskia said: “We formed three months before the trials and had no idea after a phone conversation about us teaming up if it was going to work. It was make or break for both of our London 2012 Olympic dreams.
Hannah said: “Winning the Worlds was absolutely incredible. We went there knowing we could potentially win if all the bits and bobs came together at the right time and it did. It just gave us an absolutely huge, huge boost in confidence.
“It was the first event Saskia and I have won together, we’ve got a lot of silver medals, but that was first the gold medal. That’s something we really, really wanted to achieve before the Olympics just to prove to our competition and ourselves that we can win. It’s just given us that extra little boost and hopefully we can do it again.
Following the above report we have Race Day 7 Update from RYA:
Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark overcame gear failure to end day seven of the Olympic Sailing Regatta sitting pretty in silver medal position at Weymouth and Portland (Saturday 4th August). After an opening race fourth today the Brits came out in determined fashion in race two, carving out a commanding lead in the early stages of the race. But Mills and Clark suddenly started to slow down on the first downwind leg with Clark spending several minutes seemingly tackling an equipment problem in the boat. The girls got going again and managed to secure a creditable sixth place finish in that race – their fourth race in total – to leave them two points behind Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie (NZL) in first. The 470 Women are scheduled to resume at 2pm tomorrow (Sunday 5 August) on the Nothe spectator course.
