New Ventnor & Niton Transport Study
Jul 1st, 2009 | By Gavin Foster | Isle of Wight News From The Island PulseA new study is to look at future options for the travel route between Ventnor and Niton and, in particular, the Undercliff.
The Isle of Wight Council has commissioned engineering experts Halcrow to undertake the work and present a number of options for consideration later this year.
Solutions they will examine will range from making the Undercliff into a greenway with cycle and pedestrian access, a ‘patch and mend’ approach, and engineering solutions to help keep it open as long as reasonably possible.
The study will also look at a possible diversion route inland via Niton and Whitwell and how the effects of traffic can be best mitigated if this option was progressed.
At the same time, council officials will discuss with potential funding bodies what grant money could be available to fund the chosen scheme.
Halcrow’s report, expected to be considered in October, will identify costs for each option proposed and will also include a recommendation for what is the best way forward.
The council recognise the importance of consultation and the brief will ensure that local communities will be consulted fully before agreeing on which option to progress.
Stuart Love, IW Council director of environment and neighbourhoods, said:
“The issue of the Undercliff has been a long and complex one.
“Through the work of Halcrow we will be able to consider a range of options and hopefully find a sustainable solution for this stretch of road. “
