A new ‘state of the art’ Medical Centre is due to open shortly in East Cowes for the benefit of local residents, replacing the existing Primary Care Trust (PCT) owned Health Centre in York Avenue.
The 1,584 sq m (17,050 sq ft) modern, purpose built Medical Centre will be located off Church Path, next to the Waitrose store, and will house Dr Andrews & Partners GP Practice, Lloyds Pharmacy and services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust including Podiatry, District Nursing, Health Visiting and Dentistry.
Nick Emery, Practice Manager, Dr Andrews & Partners GP Practice, said: “We are very excited about moving into the new Medical Centre which is now planned for early August, and providing the local community with a full range of healthcare services with fantastic facilities.”
“As with major projects of this size, there have been a few early teething problems. We had intended to move into the new facilities this week but owing to last minute IT and telecommunication issues, we had to postpone the move. We would like to apologise to our patients for any inconvenience this has caused especially as a letter was sent to all households advising them of the move and change in telephone number, a few weeks ago. We are asking patients to continue to use the current number – 0844 477 3116 – in the meantime”
The GP Practice and Lloyds Pharmacy will be moving into the new facilities in early August (date to be confirmed) as part of the first phase. All other services will be relocated to the new site at a later date.
The GP Practice will be located on the first floor of the new Medical Centre, accessible by a stairway and a passenger lift. A wheelchair suitable for the lift will be provided on the ground floor for patients use. Free patient parking including disabled parking will be available for up to two hours in the adjacent Waitrose car park.
Helen Shields, Executive Director for Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group said: “I am delighted that the new East Cowes Medical Centre is now ready to deliver NHS services. The old building from which both GP and community health services have been operating is no longer suitable for the provision of modern healthcare. This new modern building is something we in the NHS, patients, staff and the residents in East Cowes can be proud of.”
Developed by MedicX in partnership with NHS Isle of Wight, the Medical Centre marks the latest phase in the regeneration of the former GKN Works at East Cowes and was brought forward by a number of local partners including NHS Isle of Wight and the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA), to offer a centralised location for local doctors and staff to provide an improved service for patients and the local community.
Paul Chandler, Construction Director, MedicX, said: “It has been a delight to work with NHS Isle of Wight, the GPs of Dr Andrews & Partners and the HCA in delivering a new ‘state of the art’ Medical Centre for the residents of East Cowes. We recognise the huge benefits the new healthcare facilities will bring to the local area and are confident the users of this new Centre will be delighted with what has been achieved.”
Paul Flatt, HCA Senior Development Manager, added: “The Medical Centre marks another important step in our work to develop East Cowes as a great place to live, work and visit. The HCA is committed to the regeneration of East Cowes and has invested substantially in the delivery of infrastructure, new homes and regeneration over the past 10 years. This project is testament to the close relationships we have with our partners.”
