Jul 1st, 2008 | By Gavin Foster | In: Council, Isle of Wight, NewsThe latest recruits to the Isle of the Wight Fire and Rescue Service will formally join the service at a passing out ceremony in Ryde on Friday 4th July. The seven new recruits will join the retained duty system of the service following an intensive training programme.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Alec Southcott said:
“The course has been a comprehensive, compact and very physical one and their skills have been tested time and time again in the most rigorous of ways to reflect the demands of their modern role.
“I am pleased to say the recruits have achieved the standards required of them and I know they will now become valued and dedicated members of crews at their respective stations.”
Though passing out, the training for the recruits will continue. They will now be placed on a 42-week Firefighter Development Programme learning on the job and from the experiences and actions of their colleagues. In about six months time, they will also attend a course after which they will be qualified to use breathing apparatus.
Welcoming the recruits Cllr Barry Abraham, whose cabinet responsibilities include the Fire and Rescue Service said:
“These firefighters will join their colleagues in showing total dedication to providing the very best service to the Island. I know they will be a credit to themselves and the IW Fire and Rescue Service.
During the ceremony, a special award will also be presented to the recruit who has shown the most effort and improvement during the course. The recruits will also be inspected by the Deputy Chief Fire Officer and IW Council chairman Cllr Arthur Taylor.
