New Clock Face For Newport Minster

Nov 7th, 2008 | By Simon Butler | Isle of Wight News From The Island Pulse

Following the successful positioning of the new stone clock face on Newport Minster’s tower last week, work to the clock’s mechanism is set to be completed along with the finishing touches to the paint work. The clock will remain covered until scaffolding is taken down at a later date.

The new clock face, funded by the Isle of Wight Council has taken weeks to craft by specialist workers from Wells Cathedral Stoneworks, the company carrying out the major restoration works on the historic church.

Cllr David Pugh, Leader of the Isle of Wight Council said:

“It will be superb to see the clock face revealed after so much preparation on the ground. Having seen the stone face being painted in the church, I am extremely impressed with the level of detail and quality of the craftsmanship.

It is a great asset to the church and the Island as a whole and I am sure will bring residents and visitors pleasure as they walk through St Thomas’s Square.”

Canon Palmer said:

“The members of the Minster congregation and the Friends of the Minster are very grateful of the Council’s help and support and are delighted at the prospect of this community facility being restored to its former glory.”
