Armed Forces Day On Wight

On Saturday 27th June 2009 a twelve-hour programme of events has been planned to take place in Ryde as part of National Armed Forces Day 2009.

National Armed Forces Day is being celebrated on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 27th June 2009. Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day

Organised by a Committee of representatives from The Royal British Legion, Lord-Lieutenant’s Office, Isle of Wight Council, Ryde Town Council, the Police and Territorial Army, the day offers residents of the Isle of Wight an opportunity to honour Great Britain’s service personnel of the past, present and future.
 
Armed Forces Day promises music from Cowes Royal British Legion Band, Wight Diamonds Marching Band, Vectis Corps of Drums and ‘Proms in the Park’ performed by the Trident Concert Band.  Events for cadets on the beach, sea rescue display, proms in the park and fireworks.

A range of military vehicles will be on display throughout the day and crowds will be entertained with demonstrations from 165 Regiment Territorial Army, Ryde Inshore Rescue and RAF fly pasts.

The event will culminate in a concert in Apply Park followed by a fireworks display.

Cllr Roger Mazillius, Chairman of the organising committee said:

“Armed Forces Day is a day of celebration designed to show our appreciation of our Armed Forces personnel of the past and present.

Many organisations have come together to create a full and varied programme of events to appeal to all ages and we look forward to welcoming people on the day.”

Leaflets containing more information about the Isle of Wight’s Armed Forces Day celebrations can be found at the Island’s libraries and tourist information centres.
 
It is requested that all armed forces personnel attending the event wear full uniform and medals.
