Misty Morning Wins Annual Isle of Wight Photographer Awards

Michael Cooper’s image of a Misty Morning on the island has won him the title of Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year 2010.

The magical image of sweeping strands of early morning mist gently outlined by fluffy sun kissed clouds and broad skies, captivated the judges interest in the ‘Elements’ category earth: wind: fire: water.

Michael Cooper has won the competition, which annually calls for novice and experienced photographers from across the Isle of Wight to submit images online for a chance to take part in a massive exhibition at the Quay Arts Centre in Newport.

Runners up in joint second place:  Martin Sothcott, Windswept Clouds-Newtown Creek and Jamie Russell with Fishing the Calm Summer Waters-Shanklin Chine.

Together with his winning certificate, Michael (pictured) and runners up received a large canvas print presented by Isle of Wight Council Chairman, Cllr Ian Stephens.  Everyone who entered and  selected for the exhibition received a certificate too.

All of the 40 shortlisted images by over 30 photographers are winners.  The competition ethos from inception in 2006 is inclusion and the main aim to celebrate all photographers efforts. The added bonus being to give them a chance of being part of the largest exhibition of photographers on the Island.

The IWPOY awards are currently taking place at the Quay Arts, more reviews and photos of the Awards to follow….

Over 100 people packed into the Cafe for the IWPOY Awards  at the Quay Arts.

The overall winner Mr Cooper,  said:

“The image, was one of several I took when I went out early one morning in October.  It was great to find out that my image was shortlisted, there were some fantastic entries.”

“We had some exceptional images submitted for the 5th IWPOY and we would like to congratulate overall winners Michael, Martin and Jamie, each of whom received a large canvas print of their entries.”

“The IWPOY, now enters its sixth year and was the original concept of Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group (IWDIG) Founders Amanda Johnson and Gary Early.  The competition and awards are held with support from the IWDIG, Wight Photo Breaks, Essential Signs & Print, Island Pulse and the Quay Arts in providing the Exhibition space.  This year we would also like to thank The Island Wine Company for their hospitality in providing a fine selection of their wines for the reception.”
