A man has been arrested by detectives investigating a series of burglaries and suspicious reports in the Ventnor and St. Lawrence area on New Year’s Day (Saturday, January 1, 2011).
A 21-year-old man from Sandown on the Isle of Wight was arrested on Sunday, January 16, 2011 on suspicion of burglary. He was taken to Newport Police Station for questioning. The suspect was later bailed until January 31, 2011 pending further enquiries.
The first burglary took place at an address in Bath Road, Ventnor at approximately 8.30am on January 1, 2011 when two men were disturbed by a woman while they were trying to force entry to her apartment. Nothing was reported stolen.
At approximately 9am, a man challenged two men in the sitting room of his home in Belgrave Road, Ventnor. The home owner was not threatened or hurt. A purse and credit cards were reported stolen. Some of the credit cards were found later the same day on the beach at Steephill Cove thanks to information from a member of the public.
Shortly after 11am, a woman reported two men acting suspiciously in Old Park Road after they had called at her front door to ask for a drink of water.
At 12pm, a member of the public called police to say a cash register from the Wellington Hotel in Belgrave Road had been found on the beach near the Spyglass Inn on Ventnor seafront.
Minutes later, a separate call was received from another member of the public who had seen two men acting suspiciously in the Hunts Road area of St. Lawrence at approximately 11.40am.
On Sunday, January 2, a burglary was reported at an address in Southgrove Road, Ventnor. A passport and more than £400 in cash had been taken sometime between 4pm on Christmas Eve (Friday, December 24, 2010) and 11pm on Saturday, January 1, 2011.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Iain Robertson of Isle of Wight CID said: “All these reports are being linked by police as we carry out a range of enquiries to recover further evidence and identify suspects.
“Victims and witnesses have been able to give us descriptions of two men believed to have been involved in this series of burglaries. They were described as:
Aged in their late teens to early twenties
Between 5 ft 9 and 5 ft 10 ins tall
Short light brown hair
One man was wearing a blue and grey top.
“We’re grateful to members of the public who’ve given us information and assistance so far. Anyone else with information or who thinks they may have seen two men acting suspiciously in Ventnor or St. Lawrence on New Year’s Day is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.”
