Madness On The Isle of Wight

Jul 3rd, 2009 | By Lucy Johnson | Isle of Wight News From The Island Pulse

A new festival in Carisbrooke Castle Fields will be going ‘One Step Beyond’ and bringing Madness back to the Isle of Wight this August Bank Holiday Sunday.

Ska Pop legends Madness will headline ‘Summer Madness’, a one day open air music event, (Sunday, 30th August) in  Froglands Farm fields adjacent to Carisbrooke Castle

As part of a 30th Anniversary Tour, Madness have ruled the festival circuit as firm favourites for the last 25 years with their prolific, bouncing, beloved sounds.  Fans can expect to relive the Madness sound of the 80s, with legendary hits, including One Step Beyond, It Must Be Love and Our House.

The event is specifically aimed to take place when the Island becomes the weekend home base to thousands of scooterists from across the UK .  At present Madness are the only band announced to be playing at the non-camping, one day event but there will be on offer a range of licensed bars, food outlets and merchandising stalls.

For those that dont know who Madness are, photos above and details from the Island Pulse Bestival archives;

 They are a likely bunch of cockney school mates who banded together to craft urban tales of playground bullying and getting drunk too young, they became the ska-stepping voice of a generation galvanised against the struggles of the 80s – but one with a permanent cheeky smile and a pair of shades on its face.

Fully aware of the chasm in time since their heyday, the band line up, Suggs, Barzo, Chrissy Boy, Woody, Chas Smash, Thommo and Bedders reach out to some of the artists doing now what they did then – representing real life.

Summer Madness! is the idea of Isle of Wight promoter John Curd, who said:

“As an Island resident, I wanted to create a boutique music event, that offered fantastic fun at a great location. The Isle of Wight is now starting to become known as the festival isle and we want to add to that great reputation, by providing a yearly event that puts on the very best of music in one of the most beautiful settings in the British Isles.”

The Isle of Wight County Press reports: A licensing application to stage the concert is currently under consideration. English Heritage, which owns Carisbrooke Castle, had initially supported promoters but then withdrew the use of its car park and coach drop-off point.  Steve Alexander, English Heritage’s acting head of visitor operations for the Island, said: “We’re concerned about access, security and risk to the castle, along with the potential high level of traffic and congestion.”   Read More HERE: Madness To Play Carisbrooke
