Lewis Carroll Photographic Exhibition @ Dimbola

Jan 9th, 2008 | By Citizen Media | Isle of Wight News From The Island Pulse

Don’t be late for a very important date, at Dimbola Lodge on the Isle of Wight.

Lewis Carroll might be best known for his poetry and of course Alice in Wonderland, but he is also considered one of the best amateur photographers of his time.  Covering a wide range of subjects, taken between 1856 and 1880, the highlights are arguably his wonderfully atmospheric portraits of children. Inspiration for Alice I’m sure!.

Dimbola states the main purpose of this exhibition on until – Sun 3rd February 2008 is to show the range and variety of photographs taken by Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, from topography to still-life, from animals to scientific skeletons, from portraits of famous Victorians to his own family and his wide circle of friends.

The exhibition is divided up into categories that show the development of his photographic opus.  He is best remembered for his remarkable photographs of children, both boys and girls, in single portraits and in groups, and a significant part of the exhibition is devoted to these photographs.  He spent nearly twenty-five years taking photographs, all using the wet collodion process, from 1856 until 1880.
