John Coles reports:  Isle of Wight Detectives investigating a burglary at a house in Newport are trying to trace a Good Samaritan who recovered a stolen handbag that it’s believed was discarded in the River Medina.

The brown leather bag was taken from the address in York Road sometime between 11.30pm, Thursday, April 3rd and 7.30am Friday, April 4th.

It’s believed the suspect entered the house through the front door, which appears to have been left open by mistake.  They were able to take the handbag as well as a purse, a wallet, some loose cash and a Nokia mobile phone.

DC Lee Torrance from Newport CID said:

“This burglary appears to have been committed by an opportunist who’s benefited from a genuine mistake.

“I am appealing to whoever found the handbag and left it outside Newport police station to contact me so we can work out exactly when and where it was discarded. That person may also have vital clues that could lead to the identification of the suspect.”

As part of Hampshire Constabulary’s Safer Homes campaign, officers in Newport CID recently issued advice on how to protect your home as the warmer months approach.

DC Torrance continued: “We’re committed to reducing the number of burglaries on the island. I’d therefore urge everyone to follow the advice and help prevent similar crimes.”
