Isle of Wight Pond Wardens  are looking to make a splash with new members, to assist in the management of the Island’s wildlife ponds. The scheme already has over sixty active members but with over 500 ponds in need of care new recruits are always welcome.

A free all-day training course is to take place in Newport in October aimed at pond enthusiasts who want to do their bit for the environment. This course is be funded by the Environment Agency, whose Isle of Wight staff are all to train as Wardens.

“Pond Wardens are trained in managing ponds and their surrounding habitats to benefit native wildlife and the wider community.  Their role is to act as ambassadors for ponds and to involve local people in the care of ponds. Safety and fundraising is also covered in the course”

Anyone thinking about becoming a Warden can come to the open evening and talk at 7pm Thursday 18th September at the Riverside Centre in Newport.

The Footprint Trust will be providing the training.  This will be followed by an all day training event on Thursday 23rd October – at a venue to be informed to those booking.
