A stark warning is being issued to benefit cheats as the Isle of Wight Council successfully prosecutes a 59 year old woman caught falsely claiming over £3,000 in Housing and Council Tax Benefits.

Appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court yesterday (1st Dec 2008), Ms Andrina Rodgers of Westfield Park, Ryde pleaded guilty to three counts of benefit fraud in offences dating back to October 2006.

Ms Rodgers who deliberately misled the council by providing false information relating to her circumstances was sentenced to a four month supervision order with a curfew requirement for a period of six weeks from 19:00 to 07:00 Friday to Sunday nights. She is also required to pay back the full amount of £3229.37, which was falsely claimed.

Cllr Barry Abraham, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for residents and resources said:

“This sends out a strong message that the Isle of Wight Council will pursue those who falsely claim benefits. The Council has a responsibility to protect taxpayers’ money and its robust investigations team will find those who defraud the system and ensure any money falsely claimed is paid back through the courts.”
