Historic Race in Isle of Wight Skies: Image Red Bull

This week a time and agility test across the Isle of Wight, brought together two of the world’s most impressive flying machines of their respective eras in a celebration of air racing though the ages.

Using the Needles as a natural start and finish gate, world series leader Paul Bonhomme and Nigel Lamb raced a Spitfire against the MX2 in the skies.

It was a historic nod to the UK Schneider Trophy course which was situated around the Solent over Calshot and Cowes, Bonhomme and Lamb flew their planes through the Needles and around the Schneider Trophy race track.

Bonhomme’s aim was to test the speed and agility of the Spitfire, against a modern day plane designed specifically for the Red Bull Air Race and to celebrate the return of the Red Bull Air Race World Series to London.

Following the phenomenal success of last year’s event, the world’s fastest and most exciting motor sport will be touching down in London for the second time this summer.  The Red Bull Air Race World Series will see the world’s best pilots back in the UK and racing just metres above the River Thames on 2nd & 3rd August 2008.
