Isle of Wight Runners Sought For New Scheme
Nov 30th, 2009 | By Carolyn Keene | Isle of Wight News From The Island PulseThe Isle of Wight Council is looking for people to become leaders of a new scheme launched by UK Athletics called Run in England.
The scheme is designed to make running more accessible and aims to create groups within communities, workplaces and schools to encourage and guide beginner runners and recreational runners who run or walk for fitness.
The council is looking for adults with enthusiasm and a little spare time who are willing to undertake a one day training course. People of all ages, paces, shapes and ability are invited to become Run in England Leaders.
Leaders need to have a little bit of running experience, but do not need to be fast runners! Run in England Leaders can be volunteers, self-employed or employed.
The Sports Unit is organising a ‘Leadership in Running Fitness’ course, formulated by England Athletics. The course provides a qualification, leader’s licence and insurance. It’s the starting point for all those who wish to lead a Run in England group in their community, workplace or school.
Once enough Run in England leaders have been trained, information about the groups will then be publicised by the council for people in the community to join!
Lee Matthews, Isle of Wight Council Community Development Manager said:
“Running is a hugely accessible and enjoyable way of getting active and keeping fit. We hope to attract enthusiastic leaders who will share their passion for running with people taking their first steps in the sport.”
Anyone looking for further information or interested in becoming a Run in England Leader should contact the Isle of Wight Council Sports Unit on 01983 823818 or email sports.unit@iow.gov.uk.
