IWPOY 2008 Statement – Making Things Clear

Welcome news for Island photographers eagerly awaiting the results of whom will be the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year  2008, as the third annual IWPOY Awards took place this evening at the Quay Arts Centre. 

The winners in reverse order 3rd Kelly Faczynski, with Mist Over Brading, 2nd Neil Hunt Shanklin At Sunrise and 1st Tina Nicholls with Spiral Into Darkness. 

The theme for this IWPOY 2008 competition: was ‘Photos as Art – Pictures people would like to hang on their walls’ the organisers as expected got a packed house of Island photographers as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the 50 shortlisted entries were announced.

Eric Mitchell Wins JMCA Annual award presented to the person who has done the most for photography on the Island over the preceeding year and that this award is not necessarily for the best photographer but will be awarded for services to the photographic community.Also taking place this evening was the presentation of the Julia Margaret Cameron Photographic Award. 

The award is not necessarily presented to the best photographer but awarded annually to the person whom it is felt has done their best to promote photography on the Island. 

The 2008 winner was Eric Mitchell President of Sandown & Shanklin District Camera Club, who was staggered to learn of his win. 

This IWPOY Awards Presentation was by invitation only and the photographers who took the 50 short-listed images as in attendance, were presented with their winning certificates and prizes by Alan Marriott, Editor of the Isle of Wight County Press.
