Isle of Wight Nurse Wins Top Award

Nurse Teresa Day, who has already featured in the news this year as Learning Disability Nurse of the Year is a Health Promotion Specialist for Sexual Health and Learning Disabilities at the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust.
The Nursing Times are the most prestigious awards in the Nursing Industry’s calender and over 800 industry leaders gathered to watch the 13 awards presented to the finest and most inspirational nurses in the UK.
The evening was once again a night of fun, glamour and celebration! The standard of inspirational nursing was raised as the winners took to the stage on 12th November at the London Hilton, Park Lane for the 2008 Nursing Times Awards.

Earlier this year Teresa won the Learning Disability Nurse of the Year in Royal College of Nursing and Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2008. That award was presented by former MP and Health Minister Edwina Currie (pictured) in a gala awards night in London on March 27th 2008.

Teresa has developed a system called SHIELD (Sexual Health Innovative Education for Learning Disabilities) which provides a complete learning, teaching and support package for those who work with people with learning disabilities including health workers, teachers, social services staff, outreach staff, volunteers and clients themselves.
In addition, a special SHIELD clinic is provided by appointment as and when required to provide clients with the usual full range of sexual health services including advice, support, basic screening examinations such as cervical smears, testicular awareness examinations and referral for more specialist treatment, if required.
