Major Cliff Fall at Whitecliff

Major cliff Face Fall at Whitecliff Bay

Coastguards are warning the public to stay away from the cliff edge at Whitecliff Bay, after major cliff erosion took place yesterday afternoon.

Solent Coastguard received an emergency ’999′ call just after midday, from a member of the public who was at the nearby cafe, when witnessing the cliff fall.

Nigel Guyll, Watch Manager, Solent Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, says:

“Coastguard Rescue Officers from Bembridge attended the scene as well as the Isle of Wight Sector Manager, to ascertain how significant the cliff fall had been and to secure the area.

The Coastguard Rescue helicopter ‘India Juliet’ was also scrambled to confirm there were no people trapped by the fall.

It would appear we have been very fortunate, in that no people appear to have been in the near vicinity at the time of the fall. Coastguards have now cordoned off the area.

This a popular location for anglers and I would like to stress the enormous importance to members of the public to stay away from the area as there has been a significant landslip and it has left the area very unstable, with the strong possibility of further slips occurring.”
