Jazz aficionados take note: Newport (Isle Of Wight) Jazz Weekend, which runs from 20-22 July, will see the world class guitarist Martin Taylor MBE as the main draw.

Another major coup for the Weekend is the appearance of New York-based Keith Ingham, a pianist recently described by the Weekend’s resident artist Digby Fairweather as ‘one of the best in the world’.

Other leading musicians already confirmed include Georgia Mancia, Mark Nightingale (trombone), Simon Allen (saxes), Jo Fooks (saxes), Andy Urguhart (trumpet) and Dave Sheppard (clarinet). The Island’s own  popular vocalist Edana Minghella will appear with her quintet on the Sunday.

This event has been organised under the auspices of the Newport Jazz Club (Isle Of Wight) by a local committee of musicians and jazz fans who are keen to promote all forms of jazz on the Island and particularly the promotion of younger talent and emerging jazz musicians.

As well as featuring many local bands we have attracted nationally famous jazz players and vocalists to the Jazz Weekend, especially those with Island connections, also a large number of jazz fans.

Both the Newport Jazz Club and the Newport Jazz Weekend are non-profit-making organisations run by volunteers and any profits that may remain after all expenses have been settled will be donated to the nominated charity the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

We have already secured sponsorship from both The Isle of Wight County Press and Wightlink and local business but the organisers are looking to more Island-based businesses for their support and sponsorship. Volunteers will be needed to help to run the Weekend. Anyone interested may contact the organisers at the address below or obtain information from our website.

Newport Jazz Club was originally founded in the 1960s and reformed in 2010. Regular concerts featuring local and visiting jazz musicians have taken place at the Apollo Theatre in Newport; both support and interest have grown since then.
