Isle of Wight Hospice Worlds Biggest Bicycle: Island Pulse Multimedia Event Review:

On Saturday (25th August) fundraisers took to the streets on the Isle of Wight and rode the World’s Biggest Bicycle in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

The World’s Biggest Bicycle Event for the Hospice was organised by Sue Birch, who hoped to raise £10,000 for the Hospice.  Her enthusiasm and energy was un-boundless, she amassed 230 sponsored riders including former World Cycling Champion Anthony (Tony) Doyle MBE.

Island Pulse managed to scoop video and photo coverage of Tony and others at the event, of which the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival Events supported as a prelude to the launch of the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival next month.

The World’s Biggest Bicycle Event got off to a very good reception in Ryde as the Scooter Rally enthusiasts were in town and seemed happy to dig deep and give generously.  We also found a jolly laughing policeman desperate to reduce his carbon footprint and further involved the community in fighting crime, by taking a spin with Julie’s Team.

At the Island Steam Show the bike required some slight maintenance before it went into the arena, but afterwards despite the very hot weather the riders time trial was an impressive 1 min 2 secs on the grassed surface.

Dan from Charity Bikes  told Island Pulse:

“They had towed the bicycle all the way from Sheffield without a problem and would be happy to bring the ‘World’s Biggest Bicycle’ to the Isle of Wight again, as from what he had seen, it seemed like a great place to live.

Sue Birch told Island Pulse earlier this week:

“I would like to thank everyone sincerely for giving up their time on a Bank Holiday to support this event, and also for getting sponsorship.  A big thank you also goes to Red Funnel, Tav Cycles of Ryde and the IOW Council for sponsoring this event.”

“The potential is there to raise a lot of money for charity and to have a real laugh.”

We have to add everyone truly seemed to enjoy the experience and made light work of such an enormous bike. If the opportunity arises again for the IW Hospice to host the Worlds Biggest Bicycle Event, then we would say this as a fundraising event was definitely one not to miss.
