Isle of Wight High Sheriff Presents 1st Wootton Scouts With Awards

High Sheriff presents Six 1st Wootton Scouts with Chief Scout’s Gold Award.

Two female and four male Scouts at 1st Wootton Scout Troop have been presented with their Chief Scout’s Gold Award by the Island’s High Sheriff, Nick Hayward.  Two other Scouts also received awards: Sam Hewitt was declared Wootton’s ‘Scout of the Year’  and Dylan George was made Senior Patrol Leader. 

 Chief Scout’s Gold Award recipients are: Jake Cooke (13), Jodie Hewitt (14), John Chiverton (14), Katie Thomas (14), Michael Ilott (13) and Peter Stevens (13)

Presenting the Awards High Sheriff Nick Hayward congratulated the Scouts and said: “Scouting is a wonderful movement for young people which teaches the important values of friendship and team work.   My congratulations go to all the Scouts at 1st Wootton who have achieved this top award.”

This award is the highest available in the Scout Section.   The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10½ and 14 years.  The Scout Troop is the third section in the Scout Group, above Beavers and Cubs.  On leaving Scouts young people are able to join an Explorer Scout Unit.  A new Explorer Scout Unit is being set up in September at 1st Wootton Scout Group.

Jake Cooke one of the six Scouts said: “We get to do a lot of things in Scouts and its fun. I’ve been hiking, camping, done fitness training and lots more.”    Jodie Hewitt, another award recipient said: “Scouts is really fun and you get to meet new people.   You make loads of friends and do some really cool stuff.”

Mr Hayward continued:

“Scouting has an important place in the Island’s community which would not be possible without the dedicated support of all the Leaders and adults who ensure that young people can enjoy the many opportunities that Scouting provides.   They make an important contribution to the Island community.”

Scout Leader Julian Thomas said: “All six Scouts have worked very hard towards their Chief Scouts Gold Award.   Whilst we will be sad to see them leave the Scout Troop we look forward to seeing them in the Explorer Scout Unit and in future years receiving their Queens Scout Awards.”

Two other Scouts also received awards: Sam Hewitt (12) was presented with a certificate and cup as 1st Wootton’s ‘Scout of the Year’ Dylan George (12) was made Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), an important position in the Troop.

Mr Thomas continued: “Both Sam and Dylan have made important contributions to the Troop over the last year and as senior members of the Troop they set the example for the other Scouts.   In the last year Scouts have made rockets, been camping and hiking, night hikes, amateur radio, mechanics with local garage Harwoods, a visit to the RNLI, as well as social activities like bowling.”
