Brian Postill reports: Having recently seen on TV South the hopes of the Isle of Wight to go totally self sufficient in power in the next few years.
I had an idea about using the powerful tides that run between the Island and the mainland by piers that could incorporate water turbines in their construction. (Such as seen in old films about water mills connected to geared drive shafts that ran small factories).
They could provide masses of electricity plus any buildings on the piers could incorporate solar panels and wind turbines. Also the piers could be used for public attractions, for which an entry charge could be levied to assist in costs relating to maintenance.  The ideas are endless, and perhaps there could be several piers built around the island as holiday attractions, etc.
Carolyn Keene of Island Pulse adds: Equity Green published an article last July, with details of this potential click HERE: Tapping Water’s Potential For Renewable Energy .
The article included details of a USÂ renewable energy company called Verdant Power who deliver electricity to end-use customers using water to generate energy, Of which they were the first to install a water turbine field, that is connected to the grid.Â
Electrical power in a cost-effective manner, causing minimal or no ecological impact, and with consideration for social equity.Â
