Carolyn Keene reports:   Roads on the Isle of Wight are set for a major upgrade, thanks to a £325m Private Finance Initiative (PFI) improvement package.

The Isle of Wight scheme consists of approximately 800 kilometres of road made up of principal roads, non-principal roads and unclassified roads as well as 14,000 street lights.

The Isle of Wight Council will now draw up an Outline Business Case with work scheduled to start in 2011.  The funding will allow the Isle of Wight Council to upgrade and improve its roads over the next 25 years.

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton today approved the PFI improvement package and said:

“Better quality roads mean safer and quicker journeys for local people - this new funding will benefit all road users, whether they are motorists, bus users, pedestrians or cyclists.

“Communities with better roads also attract significant new investment, helping to boost local economies. I hope people on the Isle of Wight will soon start to feel the benefits of these schemes.

“I am very pleased that local authorities around the country are using PFI arrangements to deliver these improvements.”

Government support of PFI credits for local authorities has been endorsed by the interdepartmental Project Review Group (PRG). A full list of the schemes approved by PRG can be found on the website of the Department for Communities and Local Government.
