Carolyn Keene reports:   It’s that time of year again for Island Villages to enter the annual Isle of Wight Best Kept Village Awards.  Time to take stock and look at what improvements are needed and make their village a better place, not just for the sake of the awards, but more importantly for the residents.

Any village, irrespective of size, can enter and the focus of the awards is on village appearance, amenities, environment and of course will require community involvement.

Awards will be given in five main categories: the best kept village, best extra large village, best large village, best medium village and best small village. There is also the Merlin Trophy for conservation.

The award is not just about pretty villages, it is about community spirit and will seek the involvement of the whole village community of all age groups and organisations.  This not only fosters greater pride in a village, but it can increase tourism and interest in the area.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Isle of Wight County Press and the WI are among several companies and organisations, who are sponsoring this years awards.  First round Judging will take place in May, with the final stage in June and winners announced at an awards ceremony in September.
