Be Your Own Boss Advice Session

Budding entrepreneurs with a brilliant idea up their sleeve or anyone thinking of running their own business should visit an Isle of Wight’s drop-in advice session on Thursday (11th February).

Newport Jobcentre Plus is holding a self-employment open day for residents to get support and information set up their own business between 10am and 4pm.

Advisers from Jobcentre Plus and other organisations, such as Business Link, will be on hand to talk about the help available in planning a business, raising finance and also the legal and financial requirements of being self employed.

If you’ve have claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance for six months or more, Jobcentre Plus has a package of support which includes a self-employment credit of £50 a week for up to 16 weeks..

Kerrie Honey, Jobcentre Plus  manager, said:

“Maybe you’ve got a great idea or passion that could be turned into a new career. Maybe you want to work from home to fit in better with family commitments. If you get it right, being self-employed can be exciting, rewarding and challenging and Jobcentre Plus can help in the early days of you setting up on your own.”

Jobcentre Plus, part of the Department for Work and Pensions, brings together employment and benefit services for people of working age and is a key element in the Government’s objectives to help people based on ‘Work for those who can, support for those who cannot’. It provides a professional and modern service to meet the diverse needs of employers and those seeking work, including:

  • Personal advisers to provide practical support and advice to help those in need find and keep work, including training provision and benefits guidance.
  • A dedicated service to support employers in filling their vacancies quickly and successfully
  • Ability to place and search for jobs both online and over the phone (via Jobpoints and through Jobseeker Direct and Employer Direct).
  • Swift, secure and professional access to benefits for those entitled to them.
