Isle of Wight Activities Week

Jun 30th, 2009 | By Simon Butler | Isle of Wight News From The Island Pulse

Young people on the Isle of Wight have helped organise a series of events on the Island as part of National Shine Week.   Between 6th – 10th July children the festival will celebrate the talents of all children and young people, and what they can achieve.

The first event is being held on the weekend before Shine Week, with a band night taking place in Newport. The event will be held at St George’s Park (Newport Football Ground) at 18.30pm on Friday 3rd July.

Embracing the energy and enthusiasm of young people, teachers and youth workers, Shine Week is described as an exciting way to celebrate the talent that every young person has.

During the week a group of young people will meet to begin planning the annual STAR awards, which recognise the achievements of children in care.

On 10 and 11 July, young people will undertake an audit of facilities and services for their peers, testing venues and locations and finding out from others what they want to see on offer.

Youth centres across the Island will also open on 10th and 11th July in the evenings to provide taster sessions that range from music making to circus skills.

Isle of Wight Council’s Youth Connexions service has helped organise the week. Simon Dear, IW Council Commissioner for Positive Activities for Young People said

Shine Week is a national initiative we are embracing on the Island. It gives young people the opportunity to celebrate what they achieve and promote their image in a positive light.

“Already the organisers are getting lots of positive feedback and I am sure the week will be a great success”
