Following the very sad news and the subsequent sharing of this image of Geoffrey Hughes on our Facebook Pagewww.facebook.com/isleofwightnewsonline  hundreds of people from across the Isle of Wight have paid tribute to the ‘much loved actor’ who lost his battle with cancer on Friday.

Geoffrey was possibly best known for his role as binman Eddie Yeats in ‘Coronation Street’, but also apppeared in ‘The Royle Family’, ‘Keeping Up Appearances’, ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘Skins’.  His acting career spanned 50yrs, having first appeared in 1960s classics such as Z-Cars and was the voice of Paul McCartney in the Beatles film The Yellow Submarine. He also guest-starred in Doctor Who, Casualty, Boon and The Upper Hand.

The actor, died “peacefully in his sleep” on Friday night, following a “long courageous battle” with prostate cancer. He had thought he had beaten cancer in 2009, but was told it had returned after collapsing at his home on the Isle of Wight in 2010.

On the Island

Geoffrey Hughes will be fondly remembered for his charitable work within the community.

Geoffrey and his wife Sue moved to the Isle of Wight from Merseyside, in 2003 and ran Wood End Enterprises.

He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the Isle of Wight in 2009, which made him “the official link between the Island and royalty at formal engagements”.

Geoffrey Hughes will be fondly remembered by many people on the Isle of Wight for his work within the community; as an active supporter of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice along with many other local charities and organisations.

The main image (top right) along with our news link  is being shared throughout Facebook and attracting hundreds of tributes. A great actor, but a kind and cheerful man is a sentiment shared by so many people on the Isle of Wight, a small selection of those tributes include:
