Between 8.20pm and 8.50pm on Friday, November 28th, a 19-year-old man from Newport was walking along Fairlee Road towards Victoria Road.
It’s alleged another man grabbed the victim from behind, assaulted him to the ground, and continued to attack him while he lay on the floor.
The suspect then ran away in the direction of the nearby cemetery in Fairlee Road. The man suspected of carrying out the assault was described as wearing a hooded top or baseball cap. The victim received bruises to the right side of his face.
He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Newport for assessment, but did not require further treatment.
PC Martin Jones, who’s investigating the alleged assault, said:
“Police believe this was an unprovoked assault on an innocent member of the public. I would stress this is a rare occurrence in a usually safe part of Newport.
At the time of the incident, the Beacon magazine was being delivered, and there were a number of people in the area, both on foot and travelling by car and bus.”
