Campaigners on the Isle of Wight are offering much-needed support for local people affected by autism by opening a new branch of The National Autistic Society (NAS).

To celebrate the launch there will be a family fun-day on Saturday 21st June at Haylands Primary School in Ryde.   Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner (pictured) will be supporting the new branch  and speaking at the launch.

NAS Isle of Wight branch officer Louise Foley said:

“Without the right support, autism can have a profound and sometimes devastating effect, yet many people with autism and their families struggle to access the help they so desperately need. It does not have to be like this.

The right help at the right time can make a huge difference, so we plan to offer information, advice and support group meetings along with workshops and social events for people affected by autism from all over the Isle of Wight.

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner said:

Help and support for people affected by autism on the Isle of Wight is vital, so this new branch of the NAS will be a welcome addition to the local community.

Autism is a serious, lifelong and disabling condition that affects adults as well as children, so to have a resource such as this on the island to help raise awareness and campaign for change is fantastic.

At the event, the NAS Isle of Wight Branch will be calling for more help for adults with autism by presenting I Exist, a new report from the NAS which reveals that nearly two thirds of adults with autism in England do not have enough support, leaving them isolated and ignored and often completely dependent on their families.

Speakers at the event include Debbie Caulfield, who has autism, and Councillors Dawn Cousins and Alan Wells from the Isle of Wight Council

Entertainment to celebrate the branch launch includes local singer Derek Sandy performing songs from his debut album, Matt Splatt & Co from Ryde Extreme Performers, Yoga Bugs, face painting, music and singing workshops with Caterpillar Music, and two bouncy castles.

The launch takes place from 2pm-4pm at Haylands Primary School, Playstreet Lane, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

The NAS relies on the support of its members and donors to continue its vital work for people with autism. To become a member, make a donation or to find out more about the work of the NAS, visit the NAS website click HERE:
