Island Action On Climate Change
Jul 1st, 2008 | By Chris Wakeley | In: Citizen Media, Community, Eco Island, Environment, Isle of WightAt our last meeting in early May on the subject of recycling. Ray Harington-Vail of the Footprint Trust was the speaker and there was discussion of the issues involved.
The meeting was less well attended than earlier meetings, some six to eight people, and it was the view of those present that, unless a particular issue arises, an annual meeting would be sufficient in future.
I have waited to see if there was any issue which called for a meeting. Generally I consider that an annual meeting should review progress with achieving the environmental aspects of Eco Island.
The former Chief Executive of the Council Joe Duckworth indicated that he would address us on that subject, but he moved on before that was arranged.
Perhaps we might ask the new Chief Executive Steve Beynon or the Leader of the Council Cllr. David Pugh to speak to us on progress towards installation of wind and tide power, their car sharing scheme, electric vehicles and the other environmental aspects planned under the Council’s agreement with the University of Southampton.
Possibly such a meeting could be early next year around the first anniversary of the conference which lauched Eco Island.
The most obvious subject for an earlier meeting seems to me to be over the plan for a wind farm at Cheverton Down. However, Cornwall Light and Power tell me that they will probably call a public meeting themselves on the issue, so that subject is likely to be covered.
In the meantime the Footprint Trust has arranged three more of its Future Energy Events, two of them away from its Riverside Centre base.
They are:
Monday 27th October 2008 West Wight Sports Centre, Freshwater 11am to 4pm
Wednesday 29th October 2008 Ryde Theatre Lind Street 11am to 4pm
Friday 31 October 2008 at Riverside Centre Newport Quay 11am to 4pm
As before these events will provide free expert advice on modern heating systems, insulation and renewable energy and the grants available to help achieve such sustainable living.
