Hundreds Take Part In Island Sport Relief Mile

The Isle of Wight went the extra mile in aid of Sport Relief as over 350 people from across the Island took to the streets on Sunday 21st March to take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile at Appley Park, Ryde.

The Appley Park Mile raised well in excess of £10,000 (although the grand total for the event will not be known for a week), which has contributed to the massive £31 million pounds raised by Sport Relief in total.

The morning kicked off at 10am for the super-keen ‘3 and 6 milers’, with 3 further waves for the ‘1 milers’ taking place at 11am, 11:30am and 12midday. The sun shone throughout the event, making for a fantastic morning.

From teeny-tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters up against the clock, there was something for everyone on the big day which was filled with energy and excitement.

The event was organised by the ‘Appley Runners’ club in partnership with Ryde Harriers, all of which gave up their time as volunteers to co-ordinate the morning. Event Co-ordinator, Dave Furmidge said

“It was great to see so many people running today – everyone can do the Sport Relief Mile and that’s what’s so brilliant about it”

The Appley Park Mile was one of many miles taking place up and down the Country. Milers in cities from Brighton to Belfast completed the mile, along with a host of famous faces including Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Colin Jackson, Eddie Izzard and Frank Skinner.

The Appley Park Mile raised well in excess of £10,000 (although the grand total for the event will not be known for a week), which has contributed to the massive £31 million pounds raised by Sport Relief in total.

Sport Relief would like to say a huge thank you to each and every person who has donated money or given their time to ‘Rise to the Challenge’ – we could not have done it without you! All the money raised for Sport Relief will be spent to transform lives here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.
