Eight new ‘Histree Trails’ created by the Isle of Wight Council are to be launched in Northwood Park in Cowes on Saturday 9th August 08 thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

To celebrate the launch of the new trails located in Ryde, Brading, Shanklin, Freshwater, Cowes, East Cowes and Newport (including a cross-Island trail), the public is invited to attend ‘Treemendous Trees’, a tree-themed morning taking place between 10am and 1pm in Northwood Park.

There will be a variety of free, tree-related activities for all ages throughout the morning including storytelling, tree decorating with local artists, giant drawings with Island 2000, woodland crafts with the Wildlife Trust and an opportunity to ‘meet the trees’ with local experts.

Each of the eight trails is accompanied by a leaflet featuring a trail map, information about the area and species identification. They will be available in Northwood Park on the day as well as in Tourist Information Centres and Libraries across the Island shortly.

Cllr Tim Hunter-Henderson, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for environment and transport said:

“The trails are the culmination of almost two years work, with volunteers and local groups assisting the council in recording the Island’s many magnificent and historic trees.”
