News update: Read Good Omen Arreton Hare Found 5th Aug 09
Could it be a ‘Good Omen’ as we see our breaking news of the Hare Raising Mystery @ Arreton has elevated interest from the national press via the Mirrors Blog: Art: Hare we go again… ‘Good Omen’ Missing Hare @ Arreton
As previously reported: When passing through Arreton this morning, I discovered the Hare is missing from the Hare and Magpies wood carved sculpture. I believe Paul Sivell, the chainsaw sculptor, carved the piece entitled Good Omen out of Leyland Cypress (visit his website).
I now see Fay Woodford on Twitter reports the same “ the hare has been stolen from arreton junction! Only left the magpies and a hacked bit of wood behind.”
It looks like this was a malicious attack, can anyone shed light on this mystery? as Faye says it looks like the Hare was hacked off.
Update: I forgot to add I noticed the Hare was missing from the carved trio at 10.30am this morning (Sunday 26th July)
Latest news reports of the Hare abound from the Isle of Wight Twitter Chapel.
Virtualranger tweets:
“Hare sculpture stolen from Arreton
I guess it was only a matter of time.”
along with DrLucyRogers verification of
“It was there at 11:30 pm Sat 25th”
Andy Stanford-Clark aka andysc twittered:
can’t believe it, someone’s chainsawed the lovely carved wooden hare from arreton!
It was missing when I drove past at 0915 sunday.
Further Update:
Arreton resident James Pickett, was grateful to see Island residents helping out with our enquiries into the Hare Raising Mystery @ Arreton and has provided us with a photo of the wanton vandalism.
James commented:
We (in Arreton) would like to take a chainsaw to the perpetrators!
If anyone can provide any further information in connection with this incident, which we gather occurred between 11.30pm on Saturday 25th and 9.15am Sunday 26th July 2009, please email here:
Matthew Chatfield As Naturenet Reports: Hare today, gone tomorrow?
The tell-tale signs of a chainsaw can be seen where the hare sculpture has been cruelly severed from the magpies. It’s not even an accident or casual vandalism – this was organised theft. I went out as soon as I heard, to inspect the site. Not that there was much to be done – he’s gone, and that’s the way it is. A very upsetting development. Of course, we’ll tell the police, and see if anyone spots an impressive wooden hare. Let’s hope so, as I am sure if he returns we’ll be able to put him back in place. Anyway, as this is one of the busiest roads on the Island, surely somebody driving by saw somebody working with a chainsaw right by the main Arreton Cross junction?
