Pensioner Mike Smith successfully negotiated tankers and even the QE2 to complete a swim across the Solent in aid of Ryde Inshore Rescue.
The 70-year-old grandad completed the 4½-mile sponsored swim in two hours and one minute, after his first two attempts were hampered by bad weather.
Mike Smith told the Coventry Telegraph after the latest swim,
“We got held up by tankers and there were two other ships we managed to avoid.
“I was being followed by a safety boat which diverted me away for a couple of minutes but we still made good time.
“On the way back in the safety boat we also narrowly missed the QE2.
“It was just the right day for a swim. It was perfect.”
Mike is now heading off to the European championships at Lake Bled, in Slovenia.
