Following the success of Channel 4’s show Dream School, one of its students has received funding to train on a Watersports Internship at leading youth maritime charity UKSA.

In June, Henry Gatehouse, 17 will relocate from his family home in south west London to UKSA’s 3.5 acre campus in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
From there Henry will spend time training as a multi-disciplined Watersports Instructor and in 16 weeks of paid work experience to help develop him into a confident and well-rounded instructor.
A key part of Henry deciding to train at UKSA was his opportunity to sail with UKSA Ambassador Dame Ellen Macarthur.
Henry says “Since Dream School, I want to leave London and start afresh by the sea. I’m looking forward to learning to become a dinghy, kayak, windsurf and powerboat instructor.”
Henry will be joined on the Watersports Internship by Jake Taylor 16, a student from Harris Academy, Falconwood.
The London based Harris Academies have worked in partnership with UKSA since 2005 to give their students from inner city London the opportunity to gain new skills, improve their educational outcomes and expand their outlook for the future.
The Harris Federation recently won the Inspirational Partnership Award at UKSA’s Celebrating Achievement Awards in London.
Director of Youth Development Simon Davies says “By engaging with young people such as Henry who struggle in the classroom environment, we are able to make a difference to wider number of individuals who would otherwise not have the opportunity to complete an internship. Our training programme will allow Henry and Jake to achieve success. We’re very excited about it.”
Throughout their training and once they have graduated, the charity’s Industry Guidance team will help Henry and Jake with their job search. UKSA has a dedicated online jobs board with some of the best watersports and sailing jobs in the industry.
