Equinox High Tide Warning.
Aug 29th, 2006 | By Amanda Johnson | Isle of Wight News From The Island PulseThe Environment Agency has issued advice to those who could be in the firing line if the county is hit by high winds and heavy rain.
Be prepared for flooding, says the Environment Agency as it reminds people living close to the coast and tidal areas that the highest tides of the year are due on September 8, 9 and 10.
The autumn equinox evening high tides could cause flooding if they coincide with stormy weather such as high winds and wave surges like the conditions at the end of October 2004. Then the south coast of the region was lashed with storms and high tides and the Agency issued a severe flood warning from Lands End to Plymouth.
‘Although we know that the predicted tide levels are high we won’t know until nearer the date what the local weather conditions will be over that weekend. The weather is a major influence on whether the tides will cause flood problems. However, it is important that everyone living on the coast or in a tidal area is aware of the risk and is prepared,’ explained Tim Wood for the Environment Agency.
‘Simple preparations can make a big difference and its far too late to start thinking about it when the water is lapping at your front door, so start preparing for it now.’
The first thing everyone can do is find out if they are in a flood risk area by calling Floodline 0845 988 11 88.
