As August drew to a close, the RNLI Yarmouth all weather lifeboat , The Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer) was called to assist a 44 ft yacht which had fouled its rudder on a lobster pot.
The volunteer lifeboat crew launched their inflatable Y boat and cut the yacht free of the obstruction.
When establishing the tow, the lifeboat was tasked to attend an urgent Mayday call in Alum Bay. This second call concerned the sighting of a person falling off the cliff above the bay. A yacht in the vicinity had alerted the coastguard. When the lifeboat arrived in the bay nothing was found and it is believed that the call was a hoax as there was no such yacht in the area.
The lifeboat then returned to their casualty in Christchurch Bay whom they had anchored to wait for the outcome of the Alum Bay call. The tow was re-established and the yacht towed safely in to Yarmouth. The lifeboat was at sea for more than 4 hours.
