Defence Minister On Island

Defence Minister Peter Luff MP will be visiting the Isle of Wight today Monday 6th February.  He has particular responsibility for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology.

The visit comes after Island MP Andrew Turner asked him to come to the island following a debate on the future of the British radar industry last September.

He will be visiting BAE Maritime Services in Cowes and GKN Aerospace in East Cowes.  He will also be meeting a number of smaller local businesses involved in the defence supply chain over lunch.

Mr Turner said :

“In September last year I called a debate on the future of the British Radar Industry, and afterwards asked the Minister if he would care to visit the Island to see for himself some of the cutting edge technology carried out by companies based here.  He was very keen to come.

“I am particularly pleased that we have been able to arrange for him to meet some of the smaller companies in the defence supply chain.  Many high quality jobs on the Island rely on defence contracts, either directly or indirectly, so I want to make sure that the needs of the Island are in the minds of Ministers as they make decisions.  I look forward to welcoming him to the Island.”
